I’m sure you have noticed

that a lot of games do

not fit into just one genre and can fit into 2 or more! What is considered a good game nowadays usually fit into more than just one genre,

but 4 being the most that you can fit a game into. It is also quite rare to even have a game with 4 genres but, anything past 4 is known to be unacceptable as they are usually not

too successful. The

reason why being that the more genres you incorporate into a game; the less audience it is likely to acquire. This is because there will be those who would not like one or more of the genres in the game. Also, producing such games would require a lot more production time and thus, rendering it not very cost effective.

That being said,

the most successful

genre to be teamed

up with other ones so far is Role-playing Games (RPG). This could be because of its story telling nature that enables it to easily and seamlessly fit into

any sort

of games. And from the looks of it, most of the current games of other genres seemsto

have RPG incorporated in them some way or the other. Here are

a few examples:

  • Madden NFL 13 – sports with a little bit of RPG

  • Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords – puzzle and RPG

  • Deus Ex Series – First Person Shooter (FPS), stealth and RPG

As

for the other genres, they are a little harder to fuse together with just any old genre. Although,

there are those which do match up pretty well together. A good example would be in games that involve wars, soldiers, guns etc., genres like stealth games, shooter games – FPS or Third Person Shooter (TPS) and any of the sub-genres in the strategy family have been and continue to be mashed up together. And if you look below, you will see that these combos have been quite successful seeing that the titles are some of the most well-known games.

  • Valkyria Chronicles – turn based tactics, TPS and RPG

  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – TPS, action adventure and some elements of platform

  • Hitman: Absolution – TPS and stealth

So yes! As you

can see, a lot of

genres do match up quite well. Although, preference over games within a

single genre is still very high, these hybrid games hold a lot of potential as we can see

from the case in Puzzle Quest which was surprisingly well received. Not only do they challenge the player more, they

are

refreshing and original as well.
